The origins of Shag Dancing go as far back as 1937 in COlumbia, South Carolina... Most of you may not recall this style of dancing but some of you will remember it...
Here is a short backgrounder:
The Carolina shag is a partner dance done primarily to beach music (100-130+ beats per minute in 4/4 time signature). Today, the shag is a recognized dance in national and international dance competitions held across the United States.
The basic step in Carolina Shag is a six-count, eight-step pattern danced in a slot. The rhythm is similar to six-count Swing in that it is triple step, triple step, rock step or counted as "one-and-two, three-and-four, five-six". Eight shag dance steps are in the basic pattern. The "one-and-two" and "three-and-four" steps should take about as much time to complete as the "five-six."
Carolina shag often bears only the faintest resemblance to other dances that share the "shag" designation.
This dance is performed to a song by ROd Stewart titled "Having a Party"! Sam Cook was the songwriter...
I hope you enjoy it!

Sgt (Join to see) Shag was ‘born in the Carolinas’! This couple not only teaches lessons and wins contests, they have been inducted into the Shaggers Hall of Fame! I took lessons while in GRAD school from someone who was also inducted into the Hall of Fame! Last New Years Eve I was in Ocean Drive dancing to the Embers! OD is home for the Shaggers Hall of Fame!

They are the best! They own a dance studio in Atlanta now! Have been dancing together for a long time and they are married! Shag has become more intricate since the 50’s! It’s still a lot of fun, even if you (me) only know the basic 6 count step. They practice that routine until it’s perfection! SSgt Marian Mitchell
