I was a DS late 13’- early 16’
Shark attack wasn’t anything special.
The OSUT “trainees” have a 17 week long date at beautiful “Fort Beginning” with their Drill sergeants :)

SFC Thomas Foreman I'm not personally upset myself I initially posted the article to gather opinion from the old heads an current enlisted officers or those just now leaving. I wanted to see what everyone would think an debate. It's just from the youth I know an see in Philadelphia an how every year the disrespect an entitlement tends to become greater I wonder if not having smoke sessions shark attacks ect would benefit the solider or military as a whole. I see so many kids walk over their parents in public or friends parents ect even those becoming age of adulthood.

SFC Thomas Foreman - funny thing, me too! when I arrived at basic training, FEB1994 I was told that my generation was lazy and played too much Nintendo instead of sports. Sound familiar?

Thank you my friend PFC (Join to see) for posting a thoughtful piece.
A kinder BCT seems like an oxymoron to me. BCT is designed to transform civilians into soldiers in under 2 months. Respect yes, kindness no - IMHO.

I heard this directly from GEN Funk and his point is simply, there are no more draftees or court appointed/optioned trainees. Therefore, we depend on young men and women volunteering. We need to build a team and that starts with trust. The shark attack does not inspire trust. Don't confuse this with lack of discipline, if you need corrective physical training then use it, but the shark attack is gone because it doesn't build trust.

And that is another step to weakening out Army by not putting stress on our future Soldiers. That’s why as soon as units get notified that they’re on deployment glide path that Soldiers start going to Behaviorial Health. What doesn’t Challenge you doesn’t change you.

Bingo! The SGM has nailed it with "What doesn't challenge you doesn't change you." Well said!

I disagree. Leadership and training is important. Just because things were done a certain way in the past doesn't always mean it was the most optimal.

The articles neutral point, does the absence of shark attack facilitate weakness is asinine to worry about. Shark attack is literally the first 20 minutes when the recruits get off of trans. It’s also asinine to stand around, yell and play fuck fuck games when there is a ton of administrative work to get done with the new recruits. DS will literally have 9-17 weeks to facilitate tough, planned, thorough training that will push recruits out of their comfort zones and change them. “Shark Attack” does jack shit but make new boot DS lose their voice.

SGM, I totally agree with shared struggle that builds teams and forges toughness.
