Given that it's a requirement EVERYWHERE to have a background check run when you purchase a firearm, having to get a permit is redundant. It's just another "legal" racket perpetrated by the government to suck money out of people.

If you've committed crimes that disqualify you from carrying a gun, you're also disqualified from owning one. It's the same background check with the same restrictions.

Amen Brother!! Besides the class is only like 8 hours long here in Texas. That's not enough familiarization for someone to be proficient anyway. If someone owns a handgun, they have gone through background checks.

MSG Andrew White - When a firearm is purchased legally and minimal background check, known as DROS (Dealer Report of Sale), is conducted. This DROS process coupled with the DROS form that the gun buyer completes are the entire firearms purchase process. However, (I can only speak to California) the process for securing a CCW license is far more complete and thorough in that an application must be completed, LiveScan fingerprints must be submitted, formal FBI background check (as opposed to the NICS system) including anything and everything on ones record - forever - from a minor traffic infraction up to and including some specific misdemeanors (firearms and domestic violence) and all felonies, records check with all local and statewide agencies before an issuing agency will approve the application, renewals are far less complicated. At the point of approval, one must attend a 16-hour training class plus range qualification with the handguns which will be listed on the actual permit. Indeed, this is quite a bit of stuff to deal with and I will agree that a review is in order, in fact, there is some legislation in the hopper to address this very problem, which will in all likelihood not pass. Then we have states wherein one may carry open or concealed without much in the way of qualifying. My personal opinion is that an overall program would loosen the California guidelines while establishing minimal qualification requirements in areas where there is no such control. The best argument in favor of this approach is training, and then some training. If you are in doubt please take a moment to review the appendix carry accident video I posted a few days ago.

thats Not a wise Idea...
There has to be some level of Training and LEO's need to Know the Folks " packing " can shoot straight and Know the laws...
and they also need to be able to Know those who are Mentally Deficient or Incompetent and don't Need a weapon...

No. Too many instances of the police using their authority over these kind of things to deny people their rights. The police should NEVER be the arbiters of anyone's rights. The police are there to enforce law, not make arbitrary decisions. If anyone can show good cause that a person should not be in possession of a firearm, it should come out during the NICS background check, not from some jackass police chief's pen with an agenda.

I agree a person "should" get training, but good training is going to cost at least the price of the handgun you're carrying. Should a person not be allowed to carry bff

The great state of Texas is trying to pass the same thing. It's about time!! How are there like 11 states with open carry without a concealed handgun license and Texas was not one of them?
Last year we did pass open carry if you have a concealed handgun license. In my opinion "bad guys" will think twice before committing a crime with folks open carrying. Besides, whether it's legal or not "bad guys" will still attempt to break the law. They would have to consider someone carrying could foil their plans.
