I read an article by a fellow who was in the “Devils Brigade”. He said the movie “The Devils Brigade” did a disservice to the unit. He said they were highly disciplined. The guy recounted the story of one fellow who kept insisting they were not taught to knife fight correctly. The knife fighting expert was challenged and got his wrist broken as he was disarmed. The next day their commanding officer showed up and asked who was involved in the incident. The soldiers came forward. The guy who broke the soldiers wrist was told to sit down. The officer then told the troops that they were being taught by some of the most skilled people in the world. If they didn’t have faith in their training they needed to leave and the guy with the broke wrist was kicked kicked out of the unit. The fellow said there wasn’t a lot of malingering etc. If you were given a task and didn’t complete it your bags were by the gate and you were sent on your way.

I'm always amazed by the issues that the Allied Forces had to overcome in WWII. I've always known that if I had to choose, I'd have been in the South Pacific (sweating) rather than the European snow and ice and shivering to death. Now that I'm not skiing anymore, I HATE CCCCCOLD WEATHER!

Having grown up in Texas i agree. Living now in KY it gets colder than I like and a bad winter predicted with lots of snow.

SPC Maurice Evans - I live in Kentucky. Two days ago (Nov 9) I had to switch on the air conditioning. Today I switched back to heat. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?
In the time I have lived here, I have mowed my lawn in shorts and sandals in December, I have also seen two weeks where the daytime high never got above freezing and the nighttime low was below zero every day for two weeks.
Kentucky weather is always interesting.

MSG Thomas Currie - MSG Thomas Currie, In answer to your first question: Da Shadow Do! I had Basic Training at Fort Knox. Summer 1967. Pretty nice summer weather. AIT at Fort Leonardwood, MO. Building bridges in November and falling into the cold water was a rude reminder of the comforts that the Military suspends while serving America. My "unit" went turtle on me!

I had basic summer of 1969 at FT Bliss. Training at White Sands desert NM where it was about 120 degrees every day/ When i left El paso at the airport I heard on the radio it was over 100 for over 60 days. But i will still take the heat. As one soldier said at Batstone during the battle of the bulge in the freezing weather If Batstone is not hell. It is in the same zip code.
