Why am I surprised at this? I retired from college teaching and counseling just as this silliness began. Each new administrator (they seem to rotate through every 3 years) came from outside our college culture and brought a little more of this craziness in with them. As a 30 year prof, I watched it happen as I served on search committees.

When you look at a bunch of resumes, you see it happen. We would choose based on qualifications, they would pick based on "diversity" to balance the complexion of our given campus.
