That is interesting that President-elect Donald Trump is interested in the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet as a serious alternative to the Lockheed Martin F-35 SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL
1. "the F-35 has been plagued with its share of cost overruns and technical issues,
2. the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is a fourth-generation plane that lacks many of the capabilities that define a fifth-generation plane, such as stealth and sensor fusion.
3. Redesigning a Super Hornet that meets the same requirements as the F-35 would require years of development and engineering time and probably billions of dollars."
The assumption seems to be that the F-35 will be able to eventually meet all of the requirements.
The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is a well-tested platform with significant combat testing while the F-35 is unproven in combat up to this point.
I am glad that President-elect Donald Trump is considering alternatives and asking pertinent questions of the corporations which are involved as well as the military program managers whose careers are on the line. Hopefully the cost will be driven down by this Presidential discussion.

LTC Stephen F., I think Trump is pitting Boeing and Lockheed against one another to get more competition and price concessions.

SFC George Smith, Donald Trump has done more positive and good things for the U.S. in his few days as President-elect than Obama did his entire eight years in office.

It's nice to see a President-Elect taking an interest in managing the government. Cost overruns are nothing new, but massive cost overruns on the scale we've seen with the F-35 program are new. They're the result of a bureaucracy out of control, unmanaged, unsupervised, and without accountability. Threats are needed and Trump's delivering them. The ultimate solution is not anywhere yet in sight, but it's going to take some scares to get the process moving in the right direction.
