Interesting story LTC (Join to see). The same thing with the German and Italian prisoners who were housed in the US. There was a story on here last year about I believe Italian prisoners who were treated better than our own black American soldiers. I did my basic training in 1969 at Fort Gordon, Georgia in cinderblock building that were used to house German POWs. I don't know if I'm imagining it but I seem to recall some German graffiti carved into the cinderblocks.

I saw Italian POW Camp at Fort McClellan and stayed in 2 man hooches that were once Italian POW Camp at Camp San Luis Obispo, California. Italians put the Eagle on the mountain in the distance and they made this Eagle statue. SFC William Farrell SFC Melvin Brandenburg CSM Charles Hayden

LTC (Join to see), evidence of WWII German/Italian POWs is all over old Fort McClellan, AL. The German/Italian Memorial Cemetery is perfectly maintained to this day. Not all interned were good guys (obviously). Schuberth “was well-known as an ardent Nazi, with a reputation for extreme cruelty...”
Some good came from the POWs, though. Seventeen murals were painted on the walls of the lounge in Remington Hall (the officers’ club) by a German and an Italian. Remington Hall, although on the National Registry of Historic Places, was purchased by civilians, has fallen on hard times, and is now in ruin. A religious group now has ownership and is trying to restore the building, but I don’t think they’ll ever have the funds to restore this magnificent structure to its former glory. I actually toured the building on 24OCT20, and I was saddened to see the state of the building where I attended my first dining in.
