Thanks for reminding us about US Navy Admiral Husband Edward Kimmel SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL who had the misfortune to be Commander-in-chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet at the time of the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. His reputation for attention to detail, if sometimes at the expense of larger structural planning probably contributed to his termination and reduction from 4-star Admiral to 2-star admiral. Kimmel's February 18, 1941 comment "I feel that a surprise attack (submarine, air, or combined) on Pearl Harbor is a possibility, and we are taking immediate practical steps to minimize the damage inflicted and to ensure that the attacking force will pay" indicates he was keenly aware of the precarious position of Pearl Harbor.
I expect he had some role in the fact that the aircraft carriers were not at Pearl Harbor when the attack occurred.
The US Navy had a total of eight aircraft carriers. The bulk were in the pacific fleet:
USS Langley (CV 1) 20 Mar 1922 / 27 Feb 1942 Conv. to AV 3; Sunk as a result enemy action about 75 miles south of Tjilatjap.
USS Lexington (CV 2) 14 Dec 1927 / 8 May 1942 Sunk as a result of enemy action at the Battle of the Coral Sea.
USS Saratoga (CV 3) 16 Nov 1927 / 26 Jul 1946 Used as a test target and sunk at Bikini Atoll.
USS Ranger (CV 4) 4 Jun 1934 / 18 Oct 1946 Sold for scrap 31 Jan 1947 to Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Co.
USS Yorktown (CV 5) 30 Sep 1937 / 7 Jun 1942 Sunk due to enemy action at the Battle of Midway.
USS Enterprise (CV 6) 12 May 1938 / 17 Feb 1947 Sold, 1 Jul 1958.
USS Wasp (CV 7) 25 Apr 1940 / 15 Sep 1942 Sunk due to enemy action southeast of San Cristobal Island.
USS Hornet (CV 8) 20 Oct 1941 / 26 Oct 1942 Sunk due to enemy action at the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands.
It is noteworthy that a 1995 Pentagon study concluded other high-ranking officers were also responsible for the failure at Pearl Harbor but the report did not exonerate Kimmel.
The buck stopped at Admiral Husband Edward Kimmel and no higher for the failure to prepare for and interdict the Japanese attack.
While our aging battleship fleet in the pacific was decimated, thankfully the aircraft carriers were not at Pearl Harbor. The modernization required by the culling of the surface battleship fleet contributed to the successes in 1943 and 1944 against the Imperial Japanese Navy.

My Mother was the daughter of General Walter Campbell Short. She has been a primary source of information to me. Sadly, she changed her story over the years. The Battle of Pearl Harbor is a heinous curse against the United States of America including its people. President FDR set up the whole affair. Unfortunately, Admiral Kimmel had to be involved. The cause for the conspiracy goes back to General Short's father. He had various professional careers. He was a youth who ran away from home in Texas to become a cowboy and settled for several years at Dodge, Kansas, where he became apprenticed to the only medical doctor in town, whose main business was women's health issues in addition to a hotel on the same side of the railroad tracks as the bordellos, which was, for those who knew, the cause for the Television show 'Gun Smoke' to be adult oriented. The former cowboy seemed he could never make enough money to pay his tuition to graduate to a recommendation for the Territorial Medical License Test, until he left town to hunt buffalo, and when the herds got too thin, he migrated into the Nebraska Territory and eventually into the Black Hills region where his partner who pickled tongues left him, but the former cowboy-medical student discovered he could trade whiskey to Indians for their buffalo cloaks, and after several adventures including a stint as a U.S. Cavalry scout, he drifted into Leadville, Colorado having accumulated nearly $68,000, which he invested in the Leadville Bank owned by his new best friend forever, Horace A. W. Tabor, that resulted in him becoming the owner of the Boston Mine producing gold and silver but mostly worthless molybdenum until a mineralogist at Sheffield, England discovered mixing molybdenum with iron made the alloy stainless steel good for hand tools, tableware, machine parts, automobile ornaments, and plate armor essential for tanks, battleships, aircraft carriers, and fighter aircraft. As a youth I had thought much about my desperate situation, and in a stroke of genius had begun to blame Queen Elizabeth II's Parliament for the Battle of Pearl Harbor, then while watching Public Broadcasting Service, PBS, a historical documentary on the Second Boer War, ended 1902, was supplemented by edited film clips form a Nazi propaganda film on the 45,000 women and children of Dutch and French Huguenot Afrikaners, who were murdered in concentration camps due to not being provided water or food, and here it was the motive for the crime of President FDR conspiring to usurp the U.S.A. at the Battle of Pearl Harbor--greed for mineral rights! General Short's father is shown in the 'Whos' Who' record as Dr. Horatio Short, but he was born Luke Short, who became the richest man in the U.S.A. He also invested in railroads and worked with Pinkerton Security and the Secret Service. Going home to Texas to show his parents how his hard work paid off like a fictional character in a Horatio Alger story, he purchased vast tracts of land near San Angelo, Texas for his family ranch. These lands were confiscated by the Federal government and awarded by the U.S. Supreme Court, packed with FDR appointees, for compensation to Prescot Bush as oil leases after he sued the U.S.A. at the U.S. Supreme Court for business losses due to contracts his company had to sell iron ore to the Nazis before the Battle of Pearl Harbor and U.S. entry into World War II as a combatant against the Axis Alliance. The Bushes, fake Republicans, are from FDR's neighborhood of gangsters in the Hudson River Valley of New York. Luke Short had been embroiled in a political gang war at Dodge City against Democrats; it made history known as the Dodge City War, and he had to relocate back to Texas at Fort Worth, where he had a casino, but the Dodge City gangsters of the Democratic Party pursued him to Fort Worth, and after an assassination attempt by fellow named Wright, Luke went into the Witness Protection Program of the Secret Service and relocated to Illinois Lincoln country and assumed a derivative name, Horatio, of his his best friend, Horace, at Leadville, Colorado. The Battle of Pearl Harbor was all about stealing the Short family mineral properties to transfer them to control by Democrat political campaign donors. But it's hard to find help to fight back with fake Republicans from FDR;s neighborhood in New York.
