Okinawa was the last gasp of the Japanese empire and they fought like it was. It was bad, but could have been even worse if Japan had been able to conduct sustainable resupplies of materiel and men.
The battle for Shuri Castle was a terrible waste of Marines lives, but a great victory on the road to securing the island.
The caliant men who fought on Okinawa and Iwo Jima were the reason I thought I'd never measure up to their standard. To this day, I don't think I ever packed the gear half as good as they did.

SPC Gary C. I saw the beaches near Sasebo and the defensive layout planned there. Yes, it would have been really bad. But what would have made it worse was the Japanese command was planning on using civilians to attack us as well.

LTC Trent Klug I've taken the day trip to Iwo Jima from Okinawa and hiked from Yellow Beach II to the peak on Mt. Suribachi, to put a service tag from my former spouses Grandfather (CPL John C. Whitman, USMC - Halftrack Operator/Designated Marksman) at the site, As this is the same route he took in February '45. I was in hiking shoes, shorts and a t-shirt. I can only imagine what he would have seen and went through. P.S. I have his K-Bar, Rifle Data Book and five bottles of sand from the different islands he was on in the Pacific on a plaque in my bedroom.

MSgt James Parker That's fantastic. I only got to see Iwo as we steamed by. We tried to get permission to get ashore but it was denied. My aunt Ann's two brothers both were there and made it home.
