I laughed when I read the headline. The reporter speaks of the absurdity too. Someone could make that story into a good comedy routine!

"The administration, though, rejected proposals that the U.S. obtain a warrant before sifting through certain information collected from Americans. That so-called Section 702 information, the repository of surveillance data established in the wake of the September 11 attacks, gets its name from the legal provision that authorizes it — the same statute that is being debated in Congress and among privacy advocates."

Of course. "All administrations since 9/11 have been unwilling to put an end to the "Patriot Act", and instead repeatedly renew it. Warrantless surveillance remains illegal, which is why the "Patriot Act" has to be renewed, because it was supposed to be a temporary provision because of an emergency. And it was not supposed to focus on Americans, though it could be used to do so. Look at what it has transpired since then - widespread warrantless surveillance. Are we safer. Doesn't seem so. Are we kinder people, in general, in all circumstances? Doesn't seem so. Have major crimes increased - obviously.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel I have to say, the number of interesting duty assignments you have had never ceases to amaze me!
You could write a very interesting book but I suppose it might not remain book length after going through a censorship/approval process.
I sort of regret not taking a teletype job at Langley that I was offered, when living in Seattle back in the early 70s. I was too naive to know the opportunity it was. My problem was that I hated the thought of being stuck in any job that was only typing.
