Many of our troops came back from the Middle East with illnesses from "bugs" that were not recognized by physicians who had never been overseas and had not observed these diseases before. Took a long time for them to be properly diagnosed and treated. Without the infectious disease officers some would have gone without diagnosis and treatment at all.

Correct! And thank you for your comment! Gulf War Syndrome is a notorious one. I think it was exposure to nerve agent, some even thought it might have to do with aspartame, which becomes formaldehyde in heated Diet Coke! Leishmaniasis from sand flies also a big deal.
