MY SAY: Sometimes folks ask me what a "Medical Service officer" is and what do we do? This article explains about 1/3 of the job. We coordinate medical, preventive medical and environmental services for field operations, in my case, I did that for incarceration missions, etc., at Gitmo and in Iraq. It's fun, interesting, and sometimes I got to hang out with entomologists (bug scientists) and biologists. Bottom line is "To Conserve Fighting Strength!" The motto of the US Army Medical Department. A sick or injured soldier can't fight optimally or at all, so we're always on the lookout to keep Snuffy in tip-top condition. Hooah!

Many of our troops came back from the Middle East with illnesses from "bugs" that were not recognized by physicians who had never been overseas and had not observed these diseases before. Took a long time for them to be properly diagnosed and treated. Without the infectious disease officers some would have gone without diagnosis and treatment at all.

Correct! And thank you for your comment! Gulf War Syndrome is a notorious one. I think it was exposure to nerve agent, some even thought it might have to do with aspartame, which becomes formaldehyde in heated Diet Coke! Leishmaniasis from sand flies also a big deal.
