Capt Marty Hogan. Morning Sir. According to the history that I have been told the old-old JD lawn mowers were painted blue. First I had ever heard that. When I was growing up a push mower and a couple of teen age boys kept our yard cut. Guess who was one of the teen-agers. But I also remember no grass in yards with chickens running around.

Brief bio on John Deere. Shot with Panasonic HMC 45 and edited in Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and Photoshop. March-April 2011.
Thanks Maj Marty Hogan for letting us know that February 7 is the anniversary of the birth of American blacksmith and manufacturer John Deere who founded Deere & Company, one of the largest and leading agricultural and construction equipment manufacturers in the world.
He was mistakenly credited with the invention of the tractor.
1. In 1892 in the tiny village in Northeast Iowa, John Froelich (1849 -1933) invented the first successful gasoline-powered engine that could be driven backwards and forwards. The word “tractor” wasn't used in those days, but that's what it was. At that time, steam-powered engines were used to thresh wheat.
2. Benjamin Holt, one of several brothers in the Holt Manufacturing Company, invented the familiar “caterpillar” tractor in about 1906.
Rest in peace John Deere!
