My personal opinion has always been that Stewart gets a bad rep for his "ride". It not only made tactical sense, but wasn't exactly outside his standing orders to begin with. I think Lee's army unwittingly found themselves engaged, and everyone was struggling to catch up... on both sides. Additionally, Custer isn't given enough credit for his actions that day... and what may have happened if the Boy General hadn't been as aggressive and committed as he proved to be.
