If Corporal Adolph Hitler had been killed in WWI the rest of twentieth century history would have turned out different SGT John " Mac " McConnell.
However the Treaty of Versailles would still have taken place and Germany would have been burdened so heavily with reparations that the Nazis would have been formed by Himmler, Sepp Dietrich, Ribbentrop or Goebbels.
My paternal grandfather and his brother were British Army lance corporals who fought in the trench warfare of the western front. My grandfather never talked about how he was wounded or what he saw. His brother was killed by German bombs in his home with his wife during the battle of Britain.

SSG Roger Ayscue - The USA got involved because of the U-Boats. The Germans lied saying they would back off after the sinking of the Lusitania. Also they discovered Mexico was going to be exploited to attack the Usa during the Mexican Revolution of 1909-1922

TSgt Frank Shirley - I respect your right to share your opinions. Please give us the benefit of the doubt in history-focused discussions. Many of us who love the study of history try to add information to these discussions.
1. I have been studying military history since the 1960s and am very familiar with the rise of national socialism in the German-speaking nations of Austria and Germany in the 1930s after the failures of the Weimar Republic.
2. The Versailles Treaty punished the German speaking peoples and broke up the Ottoman Turkish empire. The war-reparation payments requirements led German to hyper-inflation where a wheelbarrow full of near worthless deutschmarks was required to purchase a loaf of bread. The people of Germany were largely broken in spirit and angry first at their governments for abandoning them and then an the Allies of WWII - especially the French. It was in this environment that national socialism was born to bring back the glory of 1871 when Germany was born....
3. After the beer-hall putsch Hitler rose to prominence in the national socialist movement in large part because of his oratory skills.
4. Once he came to power, the Nazis began the incremental purge of German society beginning with the mentally retarded and those with significant birth defects - involuntary sterilization and or extermination; then they went after homosexuals, the Christian church leaders who didn't embrace Nazism, then they got serious about dealing with Jews, Slavic, and each and every group that didn't meet their bizarre standards.
Corporal Hitler was not the only leader who could have led the Nazis. Joseph Goebbels was also a gifted speaker and coincidentally Goebbels and his wife killed each of their children and then themselves after Hitler and his new bride Eva Braun killed themselves in Berlin in may 1945.
5. Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich, Heinrich Himmler, Sepp Dietrich each were ruthless leaders who could have led Germany down a similar path if Hitler had been killed in WWI.
Luftwaffe leader Herman Goring was not as ruthless; but, he had connections as did foreign minister Friedrich Wilhelm Joachim von Ribbentrop.

SGT John " Mac " McConnell - Lots of resentment. The Versailles treaty was vindicated when Hitler came to Paris and for 4 1/2 years had the last laugh.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vr4zJS4eb80
