European Union leaders are due to meet in Brussels on October 20 for the second time in two weeks to try to bring down energy prices despite persistent divisions between the 27 members of the bloc. Discussing ways to reduce gas prices is expected to be a bone of contention after a recent European Commission proposal fell short of detailing how a gas price cap could work. A group of 15 countries including France and Poland favors some form of a cap, but they face strong opposition from Germany and the Netherlands -- respectively Europe's biggest economy and gas buyer, and a major European gas trading hub.

Maybe the EU leaders could "suggest" that the U.S. ramp up its gas production to levels that would allow sufficient exports to meet Europe's demand? I know, silly idea, U.S. energy policy would never bend to the commercial benefits of energy independence.

Lt Col Charlie Brown The world is in a mess over this oil crisis. The USA wouldn't have this issue is Biden hadn't cancelled the oil leases his first day in office.

There is a slight hitch in that argument. Combined, the oil and gas industry holds leases to more than 25 million acres of publicly-owned minerals, roughly half of which sit unused. Companies now hold more than 9,000 approved, but unused, drilling permits on national public lands, all of which could be put to use today. Add to that, 90% of oil is not drilled on public land

SP5 Loberger, you are right, but... The Biden administration has put a moritorium on fracking, thus available oil and gas reserves are not available; and the "no more fossil fuels" position of the administration and the newly imposed regulations and hurdles to get final drilling permits simply discourages the oil companies from new exploration and drilling and production investments. Plus, if new wells were actually put into production the administration has regulated against new pipeline delivery systems. We have proven that the nation is capable of energy independence, the current administration simply does not want us to be energy independent. It is "easier" to import petroleum products from Russia, Venezuela, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, what a smart solution that is.
