Thanks Maj Marty Hogan for letting us know that February 4 is the anniversary of the birth of businessman who lost his fortune investing in Peruvian rice Joshua Abraham Norton who in 1859 proclaimed himself "Norton I, Emperor of the United States" and later assumed the secondary title of "Protector of Mexico".
When I first saw Emperor Norton. I thought of the Honeymooners character Norton the sewer worker.
Image: Norton on the Honeymooners in typically rare form; 1880 Saint Joshua Norton; 1879 Norton $10 denomination; 1880 tombstone Emperor Norton I of the United States and Protector of Mexico
Rest in peace Emperor Norton.

I nominate our friend SPC Margaret Higgins for Empress or Duchess of San Francisco which ever is more fitting :-)

"Joshua Norton, a citizen of 19th century San Francisco, was a rich businessman who mistakenly invested large sums of money into Peruvian rice and lost it all. He disappeared from the public until he returned one day and proclaimed himself Emperor Norton, the first and only emperor of The United States."

LTC Stephen F.: Steve, I AM SIMPLY PUT- WOWED AND AMAZED, AND SO HAPPILY SURPRISED THAT YOU NOMINATE ME FOR EMPRESS OR DUCHESS OF SAN FRANCISCO! I would make a very tailored Empress/Duchess; but I most happily accept your honor.

If you go on the City Tour of San Francisco, they tell the story of Emperor Norton.

Good Morning Capt Marty Hogan ——This is a rainy cold day here but I fear not. A few days in the hospital will cure anything. Check your pride and everything else at the front door and just open up to the world. Have a wonderful day Marty.
