There are two reasons veterans don't get jobs they apply for: 1. Applying for jobs they aren't qualified for. 2. Not tailoring their resume to each job description.

For number one I respectfully disagree a little bit.

I'm finding that there are a lot of sites that cater to veterans (Hirepurpose, the VA e-benefits site for example) that advertise jobs in both the private and government sector that where people looking for work on those sites will probably not qualify for. I'm finding a lot of healthcare, insurance and legal jobs on these sites...and although I worked in the clinic I didn't get a degree in healthcare, was not a nurse, nor am I a lawyer or licensed in anything with banking.

I disagree a little bit. A lot of companies say they hire veterans. However, they do...one or two to get their credit so they can say they are a veteran friendly company. I know a HR person that stated the veterans most of the time are preferred but the senior leadership or supervisors that do the hiring are intimidated because of the work ethic and go get it done attitude that might take their job. When that is not the case at all. We are just trained to get the job done. It is like the old Army commercial that we do more before 8AM than most people do all day.

But as you said it is incumbent on the individual to make sure your resume is ready for the specific job and that you are qualified before even applying, if you don't even do that, you can complain that they aren't hiring veterans. If I was hiring, qualifications get you in the door and then the resume gets you an interview about the real story and what you can do for my company.
