Odd that a lot of western 'villans' were hailed as hero's by many of the people and communities around them.

This posting also mentioned the Pinkerton Detectives. I had worked before for the Pinkerton's Myself as an Operations Manager in a Pinkerton District Office with three Pinkerton Offices In Framingham, MA, Hyannis, Cape Cod, MA and Manchester, NH with 350 Officers in 85 accounts under My direct Management Supervision. I later worked Supervision in an Armed Federal Contract with the US Air Force with Pinkerton Government Services. It was the Pinkertons also that had brought the James and Younger Gang to justice and of course pursued Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid as mentioned Here. It was also the Pinkerton's that were the first to use wanted posters with pictures of the wanted criminals upon them.

Great information on the Pinkerton detectives. They were also the first to guard the President I believe. SMSgt Lawrence McCarter

SGT (Join to see) - Yes, that true and the US Secret Service was actually patterned to follow the Pinkerton example. The Pinkerton's also performed Intelligence duties for the United States during the Civil War.
