When I was deployed in Vietnam there was nothing more welcome than a letter from my wife and a box of home made cookies in that order. The thread that binds.

LTC Marc King - I look back on my days as a young Marine with pride that I served but at the time I was wondering what the hell did I get myself into!

Three years in a row as a young Airman 1st, then Buck Sgt I missed Christmas. Two TDYs and one year in S.E. Asis. The boxes of cookies, especially at Christmas were so appreciated.

The local soft drink company, Ale-8, offers a service where they will send two cases to a deployed service member. We had them send it to my son while he was on a float in the SW Pacific on the Bonhomme Richard. He was popular in his section for awhile. https://ale8one.com/heritage/supporting-our-troops/

Ale 8 is a very sweet and caffeinated version of Ginger Ale that is super popular in the State of Kentucky, and a few of the border areas. I didn't grow up around it and it's too sweet for me.

Was home for a one week leave before going to Fort Hood. One day a box appears on my porch. Opened it and almost threw up. A box of cookies that my girlfriend sent for Christmas arrived. The mold and smell was awful. It sat in Vietnam for 5 months. How that box found its way to my house during my short leave I will never know.
