APOD: 2024 October 14 – Comet Tsuchinshan ATLAS Over the Lincoln Memorial

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the October 14th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD). This image of Comet A3 was taken over the Lincoln Memorial two nights ago (October 12th). If you have a clear about an hour after sunset, you'll have a line of sight on the planet Venus (southwest) and the star Antares (constellation Scorpius, west-northwest). Look in the middle...and you will find Comet A3/2023 Tsuchinshan/ALTAS. It will be climbing higher in the sky over the course of the week.

I'm going to out with my Binoculars tonight to look West and see if I can see it just after sunset.

MSgt Dale Johnson Best viewing will be about an hour after 'official' sunset. Get a line of sight on Venus (southwest) and Antares (red star west-northwest) and look in between them.

I think I'll take my Camera and Telephoto Lens to see if I can get a Picture. I'll post if I do.

MSgt Dale Johnson The picture I shared last night was taken with an iPhone 12. So if you've got a camera and a good lens, you should be in good shape. Suggest a 15-20 second exposure. Look forward to seeing what you catch!
