At least 223 people have died and hundreds are unaccounted for in the destruction wrought by Hurricane Helene since it made landfall in Florida on Sept. 26.
More than a week later, some residents and communities remain isolated, hundreds of thousands are without power, and spotty service has made communication difficult.
As people dig out of the muck and survey the damage to their homes and cities, stories of heroic rescues and devastating losses are coming to light.

Lt Col Charlie Brown We got off easy, I think. We lost internet and cell service three days and have been without water for almost a week. Compared to others, I count my lucky stars this is all we have. I did have a tree come down that is laying across my roof but no damage, small potatoes.

It's a tough story to read and the destruction is terrible. However, this has happened to us before in our history and our citizens are a hardy lot. Rebuilding is a human trait. So is remembering those who were lost and those who rose to become reluctant heroes.

It's so horrible seeing and hearing about what has happened to so many people losing their homes and some even their lives. I count our blessing the storm didn't reach our area but grieve for those impacted in such a horrible way by nature.
