Good Red Friday morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the August 30th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD). The lunar South Pole is of interest to researchers for many reasons, but one stands out in particular: water. Substantial amounts of water ice are suspected to lie at the floor of the various craters that are shadowed from exposure to the Sun. And water that humans can find elsewhere means they do not have to bring it from Earth.
This image was captured on August 23rd by Hungarian astrophotographer Lorand Fenyes. Near the center is the relatively young crater Moretus. I'll post a captioned photo showing the names of other nearby craters in a separate comment. Cheers.

So amazing that there are numerous craters all over the Moon's surface! Excellent share, Maj William W. 'Bill' Price!!!

If you have an Apple TV subscription, you should check out "For All Mankind". It's an alternate history "what if" where the space race didn't end. A good portion of the released seasons focus on competing US and Soviet bases on the edge of a crater at the south pole. They are there precisely because of the ice.
