Lt Col Charlie Brown I've always been fancinated with early man and how they survived. Evidence also shows that man quite possibly was the hunted by lions and not the other way around.

True but today the use guns and bullets whereas early man and some aborigines still kill animals with bow and arrows and spears, truly amazing.

One of the giant mistakes we make studying history and archeology is forgetting that our ancient ancestors were intelligent as we are today. NO, technologies were much less advanced, but the men and women were learning and inventing all the time.
So here is a simple question, how would you hunt these monsters. To me, going toe to toe with the mammoth would be my last choice. What technologies do we have 13,000 years ago? Fire. It is fairly well established that man was using fire at this time. Fire can keep us warm, open up food sources but Charlie we also know the weather patterns of our World, how the smoke moves with the wind, how the animals react to smoke and fire, we know the terrain in our area too. Any steep cliffs? Now I might be willing to use that sharp pointy rock to finish off a mammoth with broken legs but still not going toe to toe with one and neither should you.
