Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the August 13th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD). Jet lightning is a form of luminous plasma that occurs well above the altitudes of normal lightning and produced by a thunderstorm. Blue jets are believed to be colored based on the blue and near-ultraviolet emission lines from neutral and ionized molecular nitrogen. Here we see a giant jet, where the upper portion of the jet changes color from blue to red. This image was captured from the International Space Station in July 2024.

Absolutely fascinating. Thanks Major. I knew of the red and blue lightning but have never seen these or read of the Giant Jet Lightning. Incredible

We know so little of our planet, especially our oceans. That is why continued space and oceanic exploration is so important. I wish I could live to see us colonize Mars. I have dreamed and read of this since I was I child. I live in Kansas and I honestly believe I saw a Red Sprite off a super cell when I was a young man. It was an amazing site.
