Do military families really need to move so much?

I guess it depends on the MOS or branch. I knew SFC's and 1SG/MSG who had been with Ft. Ord units for 8 or 9 years. I was there for four. Guys who PCS'd were guys who wanted new units or reenlisted for new MOS's. The O's were there for three to five years before moving one.

Once you get tothe senior leader ranks, E8/9 and LtCol and up ans \especially as commanders I say yes...need ne thinking in those positons as stagnation is a bad thing. However, in the rise up to those ranks I believe one could stay stationary and really learn the job possibly moving from one unit to another on the same installation.

How does one 'move from one unit to another' without changing AFSC? I guess a special duty assignment might work if you can guarantee you stay at your current duty station. Not criticizing your comment, just questioning how it would work.

CMSgt (Join to see) - On smaller bases it wouldn't but larger bases one could. Tenant units to primary units etc and vice versa. A place like Kirtland would be doable...a place like where I am not so much. But overall you have a valid point...it would be more difficult in the Air Force probably more so than any other service as we are very specialized in most of our AFSC's.

It depends on the job the member does. My own career field was called "out of balance" with more jobs overseas at the officer ranks, than stateside.
Other jobs could definitely be more stable especially within the enlisted ranks.
