Journalists are apparently considered to be combatants on the the front lines, along with all the other folks who are unarmed. They ARE specifically being targeted as "the enemy" - frequently.

1.) Journalists are among the casualties in the war between Israel and Hamas

At least 11 journalists have been killed over the past week in Gaza and Israel. Several more are missing or detained.

At least 11 journalists have died over the past week in the deadly confrontation between Hamas and Israel.

Reporters Without Borders reports, “Five Palestinian journalists are among the hundreds of civilians who have been killed in the military offensive by Hamas and the response by the Israel Defense Forces.” At least one journalist working in Israel was also killed.

The Committee to Protect Journalists is investigating the journalists killed in Israel and Gaza and is compiling an updated list of the dead, missing and injured.

On Friday afternoon, Reuters reported that videographer Issam Abdallah had been killed. Reuters journalists Thaer Al-Sudani and Maher Nazeh “also sustained injuries and are seeking medical care.”

2.) Who was the Palestinian-American journalist killed by Israel?

journalist Shireen Abu Akleh

“Al Jazeera strongly condemns these repeated atrocities which previously led to the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh,” the network said, referring to the shooting of the well-known Palestinian-American reporter by Israeli forces in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank in 2022.

AFP reported, citing a Lebanese security source, that the shelling followed an attempted infiltration of the Israeli border from southern Lebanon by a Palestinian faction. The Associated Press said a nearby vehicle was left charred by the attack, citing a photographer who was present.

Lebanon’s Press Editors’ Syndicate condemned the “targeting” of journalists and described the killing of Abdallah as a “deliberate crime”.

3.) Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed a year ago
May 11, 20235:12 AM ET

NPR's Michel Martin talks with Robert Mahoney of the Committee to Protect Journalists, which released a new report showing the faces of 20 journalists killed by Israeli military fire since 2001.

A year ago today, Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed while doing her job, reporting in the West Bank. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, her death was not a tragic one-time event but actually part of a long, deadly pattern. A new report from the group says at least 20 journalists have been killed by Israeli military fire since 2001. And it says, quote, "to date, no one has been held accountable."

MARTIN: First, would you just tell us a bit more about the 20 journalists killed?

MAHONEY: Well, of the 20 killed, 18 were Palestinians. One was a British national. And one was an Italian. And all of them were killed reporting on the ground from the West Bank or Gaza over the last two decades.

—-

MARTIN: So it's been a year since - as we said, since Shireen Abu Akleh was killed. Authorities have had that much time to investigate it. And no one's been held responsible. Why is that?

MAHONEY: That's because we believe that the whole system of investigation, which the Israeli armed forces have set up, is actually designed to evade responsibility and to protect its soldiers from prosecution. When the authorities do open any kind of probe, it takes a long time. Evidence can get lost. Witnesses can forget their testimony. So no one is being held to account. And no one is being held to account for the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, who, let's remember, was an American citizen.
