This is NOT about "erasing our history" as some folks here keep claiming. It is about ending the honoring of a traitor to the United States. Now we are honoring a true American hero.

"Established in 1918, the base was originally named after Brig. Gen. Henry Benning, a Confederate general who strongly defended slavery and was a leader in the South’s secession movement"

When I was growing up, the city decided to rename a major road in our neighborhood. During the week before the official change, 'people' stole all the street signs with the old name on them.

The city didn't pay any attention, apparently thinking they were taken as keepsakes.

Over the next month, each week one or more of the new signs was replaced with the old street sign.

Eventually the problem stopped after 'people' ran out of old signs to put back up.
