America isn't a place nor is it a people. It's an idea. Sadly, it began going out of fashion at the turn of the 19th to 20th Centuries and has just about gone dormant (for the time being). Sure, a few of us, not just us old farts, still cling to it and we are "deplored" by those who abandoned it. I suppose we are inconvenient reminders of what Americans really are (while they cling only to the title). It may arise again, but that will be a long time coming.

I was in somewhat of an agreement with this until the final paragraph.
" that will restore the nation to its former greatness."
That sounds like Trump.
IMO, we have not lost our greatness. Not as long as we maintain our democracy. It has been touch and go many times, but we have always found a way to stand united in defense of our "pursuit of a more perfect union."
We do need to back off sometimes. We must reach out a hand to our political adversaries, once more find that common ground.
Finally, I would ask all to stop any discussion of secession or another civil war. That would only complete the destruction of these United States.
