Why mortars are increasingly important on the modern battlefield

While i was at Da Nang, Vietnam in 1968-69 although I was Air Force our unit the 366th Security Police Squadron used 81 mm mortars. We were ALL trained on their use but had regular crews to serve them and even got request for mortar support from the area Marine Corp units. We used the mortars a lot on air Base defense at Da Nang. Shown here is a photo I took myself in 1968 of one of our 81 mm mortar's. This was one of our regular batteries and also notice the aiming sticks which as We knew the are could do very accurate fire right on target. The Maines units in the area also knew how accurate the fire from our guys was and asked for that support many times or even for our own guys when outside the wire or during enemy ground attacks. I know first hand their value !

SMSgt Lawrence McCarter - Motors are the life saver at times. I think its great that everyone who could be were trained on there use proper use. The Army will not do that stuff now the best you could hope for would be trained in handling and transporting ammo.
