In a victory for religious freedom, a young Mississippi student will now be allowed to wear her “Jesus Loves Me” mask to school if she chooses.

Exactly! Probably because schools are allowed to make policy regarding student behavior. They may have claimed that certain speech is disruptive to the educational process. Courts usually uphold these policies in deference to the mission of the school (educating children), and allow them to restrict Constitutional rights for that purpose. In this case however, I think it would be difficult to prove any disruption to the educational process.
