On a side note; Where did the magic number 10 in the mag come from? Is it a result of many, many trips to the qual range over the years "Lock and Load one1 10 round magazine..." or did it come from somewhere else?

The magic 10 round limitation, it is an arbitrary number with no research to back it.

Behind pay wall, so I cannot offer better analysis.
But legislators tend to like round numbers. Everything is written to either a 5 (15, 25, 35, etc.) or 10 (10, 20, 30, etc.), unless there is specific science demanding a different number. Once you get in to higher numbers, it is written to the 25s or even 100s or 1000s.
Look at speed limits, thresholds for classification of thefts, thresholds for drugs, etc. Legislators like round numbers. And 10 is a round number.
