So, people ask why this matters. "It's all about the information" as Cosmo put it in the 1992 movie the Sneakers, which is a movie that holds up very well today. Twitter was controlling the information during an election, specifically that which could have had people reconsider their votes. No one likes the last-minute bomb dropping stories prior to the election but that's not what this was. In fact, the story motivated 51 high level intelligence officials to even sign a letter making a claim it was "likely Russian disinformation," adding to the false narrative Twitter decided to promote, without any evidence provided by any of the groups denying the report. They were wrong and they had no business penning such a letter without concrete evidence the laptop was fake. That was, without a doubt, election interference.

This is highly troublesome. Hiding behind the "private corporations" BS when it comes to information is a cop out and a pathway to more coordinated influence operations by our own government. I get that freedom of speech is not required of private corporations, but when it comes to denying information from getting to the masses, we all must be concerned. It is no different than when a private corporation corners and controls a market, denying all competition, and is able to increase profits at will. Only this is more like controlling a product which is essential to our lives. It is all about the information.

With this new Congress, I would like this to be addressed. It should be illegal for private social networking and media corporations (specifically those which do not require direct fee-based membership) to knowingly censor information, and for government officials to coordinate such actions with those corporations. Especially information known to be true (which should impose a stiffer penalty). We should be a country that allows information to flow, regardless of whether it is true or accurate. It is our collective job (government, corporations, and the people) to counter false information with truth and accuracy from there. I don't care if stupid people want to promote their stupidity in the public forum as this enables us to know how stupid they are. Kanye West, I would say we can all mostly agree, is a perfect example of that.

Today we have too many examples of government officials crossing the line when it comes to free speech and even privacy. If folks want to be ignorant enough to believe there is no coordination with willing corporations to hide facts, deny valid differing opinions, and withhold information, they are enabling authoritarian control. As much as some people like to suggest Trump was attempting to achieve that goal, it's almost humorous to see the same people allow it to happen without him in the picture. With regards to privacy and our laws against the government spying on Americans without due process or probable cause, we ignore the fact that candidates (some who are already serving as government officials) take the oppo research to a whole new level in which clandestine operations are occurring. Operations in which if it were tasked to a government operative/official, it would absolutely be illegal. There needs to be some serious thought put into these activities and for them to be addressed before they get even more out of control.
