The Soviet Union inaugurates the “Space Age” with its launch of Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite, on October 4, 1957. The spacecraft, named Sputnik after the Russian word for “fellow traveler,” was launched at 10:29 p.m. Moscow time from the Tyuratam launch base in the Kazakh Republic.

Bob Hope went to Moscow and did a show. He opened it with,"... I'd like to congratulate the Soviet Space Program scientists, But I Don't speak German..."
He was listed as Persona Non Grata by the Soviets after the show. And never went back there again.

I remember the day and almost hysteria in places. Among my age group at at the time it was mainly WOW.
