Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the August 24th Hump Day edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "The Cartwheel Galaxy from Webb." Fresh on the heels of its released pictures of Jupiter shared by
Lt Col Charlie Brown earlier this morning, we see this image of the Cartwheel Galaxy in the southern constellation Sculptor. Also known as ESO 350-40 or PGC 2248, it lies about 500 million light-years from Earth. We see two of the Cartwheel's companion galaxies (there are three total) in this view. Several “spokes” appear to connect the outer ring of PGC 2248 to the inner, and are theorized to be reforming spiral arms following a galactic collision.
