My firs introduction to US Military small arms tended to be the WWII Vintage back as a Cadet a Bordentown military Institute, Bordentown, NJ. This was early 1960s prior to the heavier Vietnam involvement. Weapons I used and learned about included the M1 Garand, the 1911 45 Caliber semi auto handgun and even the BAR, Browning Automatic Weapon. I also had learned elsewhere how to use the Springfield 03. I found later while in the Military I actually had to show some people how to use the M1 Garand (Which they had around for ceremonial us) and also how to disassemble, reassemble and clean it. By that point M1, and M2 carbines were something we used as well as the M16 and S&W, model 15, Combat Masterpiece .38 Caliber revolver. (It still own one that looks band new but I've fired over 4,000 round through) . The older Navy .38s they mention here I actually had got to fire as well and although We didn't use them on duty the Armory still had a few.

When I was in Germany in the early 80's, the company arms room had 3 M1D's set up as a sniper weapon.
