In December, 1907, Orville Wright flew a demonstration flight of the "Wright Flyer" at Fort Myer, VA. His lone passenger was an Army Signal Corps 1LT, Thomas Selfridge (for whom Selfridge AFB north of Detroit is named). After completing 4-plus laps around the field at about 150 feet, the machine malfunctioned sending the lieutenant to his death and pilot Orville to a seven-month stay in the hospital. No military contracts cut that day, for sure. Details of this event are available on Wiki. PO1 William "Chip" Nagel SGT Mark Anderson Lt Col Charlie Brown

Sometimes I wonder if Japan was overconfident in WWII because they used aircraft carriers and naval aviation to pull off a daring attack.

However, the loss of all her carriers shaped the war to the point Japan could not win the war.
