Why the 2022 midterms look like the opposite of 2018

From what I have read and listened to CNN is an Alt-left Nazi propaganda rag. Nazi, as in socialism and one party rule. But I use it here for those who believe CNN is truthful.
The voting midterms is the reason for this post. Notice how the current administration is trying to gain Federal control of State voting by stating that minorities need to be protected from discrimination. Yet, we already have that protection in place.
These past few months have seen voting laws in some States tightened. I suspect, the Democrats are still using the voter ID law is to keep minorities from voting argument. But I do not believe minorities are so helpless. Therefore, what is the real goal?
Who votes if there is no voter ID law? Doesn't our Constitution and Bill of Rights make it clear who can vote? If this is Federal over reach, is it due to the expected loss of seats in the midterms as per the CNN article?
To me, this action by the current administration is an attempt to control votes and counting of votes. It appears to me, voting is much more important than those who do not wish to get a vaccine or someone's twitter posts.

Taking over the elections is the only way that the Democrats will ensure they stay in power. Using fear-inducing headlines to get the gullible on their side of the argument, they'll do whatever they can to ensure that elections will only swing their way. Now the argument is that states like Georgia are disenfranchising black voters. They're doing that because the DC and Puerto Rico statehood thing didn't work.
