I do this at times, mostly when I am pissed off about something. Also I've consciously done this when hunting to lower my heart rate for a better shot, especially if it will be a long shot.

When one paces his/her breathing, instead of gasping or hardly breathing at all, one gains the stability needed for handling stressful situations... Sometimes it is difficult to do when under stress, as it requires focus... Excellent share, Lt Col Charlie Brown!
