An interesting topic that many have thought about over Humankind's Millenia and experimented with, with disastrous results. It's been tried even here in America. If you read the Mayflower Compact, it describes a socialist Utopia without using either "socialism" or "Utopia". Fundamentally, all work products were to be stored in the common warehouse and taken only as needed by the Pilgrim families. Now, most of us have been taught that the Pilgrims starved (correct) and that the native Americans saved them by teaching them how to cultivate corn (incorrect). What saved them was when they abandoned the Compact and began operating a free market economy bartering their excess produce for that which they couldn't produce for themselves. It seems to be another demonstration of just how flawed humankind really is. Lacking an incentive to work, we simply won't work. (Well, most of us won't. Most men quit working when they retire and die young. I'm one of those who continues to work out of habit even though I am financially secure. Yes, a real oddball.) My guess is that America is well on its way to realizing Musk's vision only because we can afford to in the near term. However, growing lazy and lazier, we will be like the cattle in a feedlot where we don't even have to graze. We will be fatted for the slaughter...

The flaw in UBI is human nature. Lazy people will sit on their butts when given a sustainable living. The average under-skilled worker may benefit for a short time, but when they see their lazy family and friends do nothing for something, their drive and motivation will wane. Maybe that's why the ultra rich are pushing eugenic policies, they know current population levels and UBI isn't sustainable in perpetuity.
