Thank You for sharing your "8 Great Questions About Veterans Organizations Answered" Post, SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. Just as a reminder, there other organizations beyond the VA's VSO's, like the DAV (I am a Chapter Commander) the VFW, American Legion, and others. If contacting the DAV, a Veteran needing help with a claim should go to the DAV and ask to meet with an NSO (National Service Officer). They can start the process by going on line to "DAV,org".

SSG Bill McCoy - In Massachusetts, Each city/Town has a certified VSO... The DAV's NSO's (VSO"s) are required to take classes and pass a test for certification... I have two CSO's (Chapter Service Officers and one DAV NSO in my Chapter...

I believe vets should belong to a service organ. If the club is active , it's a good place to meet and be with other people who have been there and done that. I was very active in the American Legion for over 30 years and had the pleasure of meeting people involved in D Day guadall canal Okinawa and Iwo jima and many more,. When the meeting was over and a few beers pored, the history lesson started.

Sgt Jim Belanus - I agree & have been an American Legion member for a long time. I was soured on the VFW however with how they viewed, and treated, Vietnam Vets. I've read where that's no lonoger the case, but I still have never re-joined. I joined the VFW in Okinawa in 1970, then in '71, at our local VFW where my Dad belonged. That VFW refused to let my Dad upgrade to a Life Member because while he served in WW2 overseas, he didn't see actual combat. So he switched to another post who put his paperwork right through. Still, the guys there had a negative attitude about Nam Vets so I went American Legion.

I felt welcomed by both Post's I was and am members of, Even was a District Com until I got very busy. Now all that's left to keep it going are us old Viet Nam era along with the later wars and there are not as many of them as there were of us.
