WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has ruled that the government can indefinitely detain certain immigrants who say they will face persecution or torture if they are deported to their native countries. Over the dissent of three liberal justices, the court held 6-3 Tuesday that the immigrants are not entitled to a hearing about whether they should be released while the government evaluates their claims. Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the court that they are not entitled to a bond hearing. The case involves people who had been previously deported and when detained after re-entering the United States illegally claimed that they would be persecuted or tortured if sent back.

I agree, although I did spend over 40 years in full time Police work I'd never want to be a Judge and have to make the decisions that they do. I'd rather be the one making the reports, be able to step aside and let the courts decide the final fate and not have to do that Myself.

I served on three juries over the years, all were felony trials. We convicted the guilty SOB in each case. None was a capital offense; one was a bank robbery, one a major shoplifting case, and the other was grand theft auto. All were easy. (The major shop lifting case was hilarious: a woman was arrested as she left a department store and was charged with shop lifting. She was found to have 123 stolen items concealed in her clothing. The defense attorney asked me as one of the jurors, “Don’t you think it’s possible that Ms X simply made a mistake and placed items in her clothing, expecting to retrieve them at the check-out counter and pay for them at that time?” I said, “Certainly it’s possible for her to have done that with a couple of items. But not with 123 items, like Ms X did.”
