More than 150 Army sergeants major gathered for three days this week to tackle problems such as suicide, sexual assault, racism and extremism.

One potential idea involves analyzing data on when and where sexual assaults happen in the barracks and perhaps placing first sergeants on duty during those time slots to combat the problem. That proposal is far from approved, but it shows how Army leaders are analyzing issues that have plagued the service for years

Pretty simple. Look at historical statistics on frequency over past five decades, then match it up with socially driven changes.

As if a First Sergeant, one of the toughest jobs in the Army, has the time to work his full 10 - 14 hr day can seit up all night to stop sexual assault. I agree its a problem but a 1SG up all night and weekends babysitting is impossible and will burn them out.

How much of a 'Brain Trust' does it take to understand that we just need to live by our military values??? Towards the end of my day we HAD to wear them on our dog tags. What I've always loved about them is that there is no race, sex, rank, or political overtones in any of them. Anyone who can't live by those values needs to go. Sadly, previous leadership hasn't practiced any of those values and it shows. Hopefully the SMA will figure it out.

How about empowering leaders at the lowest levels to fix this instead of doing feels good looks good badge approaches. How about teaching actual NCO leadership these days and eliminate toxic ones at all levels.

This problem is at a higher level because at the lowest levels sexual assault and troop abuse are often hidden instead of reported. I've personally seen platoon and company level leadership (Officer and NCO) get relieved for hiding issues that should have been reported.
