APOD: 2021 June 3 - Millions of Stars in Omega Centauri

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Millions of Stars in Omega Centauri." Globular clusters (such as Omega Centauri) contain some of the oldest stars detected in our galaxy. Because of this, astronomers (and science fiction writers alike) have pondered this question for years: Are globular clusters a possible home to advanced civilizations? After all, if there are stars, could there also be planets orbiting those stars? Our Sun is 4.5 billion years old. Some of the stars in Omega Centauri are believed to be 10 billion years old. Quite enough time to produce the heavier elements (like silicon and iron) needed to produce both planets and life forms.
But all that is likely fodder for another post. Isn't the clarity of this image remarkable? It is the work of an amateur astrophotographer from his backyard in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He began capturing images in April of 2020, and finished off the work in May of this year. Wonderful as it is, can you imagine what our night sky would look like if Earth was embedded in a globular cluster? Based on this image of Omega Centauri, I think it would be breathtaking.

The cluster is packed with about 10 million stars much older than the Sun within a volume about 150 light-years in diameter. It's the largest and brightest of 200 or so known globular clusters that roam the halo of our Milky Way galaxy. Though most star clusters consist of stars with the same age and composition, the enigmatic Omega Cen exhibits the presence of different stellar populations with a spread of ages and chemical abundances. In fact, Omega Cen may be the remnant core of a small galaxy merging with the Milky Way. Omega Centauri's red giant stars (with a yellowish hue) are easy to pick out in this sharp, color telescopic view."

I created a moving image similar to this at the WACX TV station in Orlando. I fed a black screen into our Vital Industries SqueezeZoom Digital effects system and zoomed into infinity. There was a tiny bit of residual (popcorn) noise in the analog portion which created the dots. he infinite zoom made it appear you were flying through the universe at FTL speeds. Then we used the Chyron to overlay 'Game Over' in alternating red and green at one second intervals. The video engineer came back from lunch, and freaked out. :)
