Good Friday (and Red Friday) morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "NGC 3521: Galaxy in a Bubble." NGC 3521 appears today in a repeat performance from September 2011. The 'bubble' surrounding the galaxy is likely tidal debris from interactions with other stars or galaxies in the past. The term 'flocculent' (fluffy) is sometimes used to describe how NGC 3521 appears to the viewer. It is located near the celestial equator (meaning it is visible from both hemispheres) in the constellation Leo.
Different accounts place it 26-40 million light years from Earth. While Charles Messier was the first to catalog other galaxies in Leo (M65 and M66 are nearby), he may have overlooked this one. The Bubble Galaxy was first discovered by William Herschel in 1784.

"Explanation: Gorgeous spiral galaxy NGC 3521 is a mere 35 million light-years away, toward the constellation Leo. Relatively bright in planet Earth's sky, NGC 3521 is easily visible in small telescopes but often overlooked by amateur imagers in favor of other Leo spiral galaxies, like M66 and M65. It's hard to overlook in this colorful cosmic portrait, though. Spanning some 50,000 light-years the galaxy sports characteristic patchy, irregular spiral arms laced with dust, pink star forming regions, and clusters of young, blue stars. Remarkably, this deep image also finds NGC 3521 embedded in gigantic bubble-like shells. The shells are likely tidal debris, streams of stars torn from satellite galaxies that have undergone mergers with NGC 3521 in the distant past."

Good Friday and Good R.E.D. Friday to you Maj William W. 'Bill' Price and what a remarkable Galaxy NGC 3521 is! The apparent tight or compact well formed galaxy seems enshrouded with a dusty/gaseous surrounding, which makes one wonder what is still going on in its galactic neighborhood... At 35 million light years distant, it may become more clear when the James Webb Telescope is commissioned in space... This should be amazing! Have a great day, Bill!
