Good morning and Happy St. Patrick's Day, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "The Surface of Venus from Venera 13." Venera 13 was launched on October 30, 1981, and its descent vehicle plunged into the Venusian atmosphere on March 1, 1982. The "cruise" stage remained in orbit to transmit any data back to Earth. After touchdown, the spacecraft began taking pictures of the surrounding area and using its spring-loaded arms to measure the compressibility of the soil and retrieve samples. Other instruments bought to the surface included an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, a dynamic penetrometer, and a seismometer. The lander functioned for at least 127 minutes (the planned design life was 32 minutes) in an environment with a temperature of 457 °C (855 °F) and a pressure of 89 Earth atmospheres (9.0 MPa).

"Explanation: If you could stand on Venus -- what would you see? Pictured is the view from Venera 13, a robotic Soviet lander which parachuted and air-braked down through the thick Venusian atmosphere in March of 1982. The desolate landscape it saw included flat rocks, vast empty terrain, and a featureless sky above Phoebe Regio near Venus' equator. On the lower left is the spacecraft's penetrometer used to make scientific measurements, while the light piece on the right is part of an ejected lens-cap. Enduring temperatures near 450 degrees Celsius and pressures 75 times that on Earth, the hardened Venera spacecraft lasted only about two hours. Although data from Venera 13 was beamed across the inner Solar System almost 40 years ago, digital processing and merging of Venera's unusual images continues even today. Recent analyses of infrared measurements taken by ESA's orbiting Venus Express spacecraft indicate that active volcanoes may currently exist on Venus."

LTC Stephen F. - Wow, this song brings back good memories. There was a juke box in this little ice cafe in Kirchheimbolanden, West Germany and Shocking Blue's "Venus" was probably played a few hundred times. :o) Thanks for the memories.

I wore my "Once per year" St. Patrick's day tie today to school. It got a lot of comments (likes so to speak) from students, colleagues and administration. They never know what to expect from me. I have practically enough ties to wear a different one every school day of the year.
