A long time ago I heard someone say that he played by ear, that at least initially, he couldn't read music.

I hadn't heard that, SP5 Frankl H, but the guy was a genius on stringed instruments, and mainly Banjo, Guitar and Violin!

On one segment of most Hee Haw shows, he had to miss a note near or at the end of playing a piece. The expression on his face as he had to concentrate on messing up, was funny.

I loved his work, and his sense of humor. Country music has lost so many talented people over the decades. The Grand Ole Opry is approaching 95 years of being on radio. I've listened to it, since 1960. For many years, it was on a modified ARN6/R101 direction finding receiver for WW-II aircraft that ran on 24 volts DC.
