Update:
1. The RMC has scanned all the records in their possession into VBMS.
The Nation Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Military Personnel Records Center(MPRC) and all the service branches are working to scan all their records so they can be accessed electronically.
The downside is there is a backlog and of course, there are delays.
2. The SF-180 has been updated
Title: Request Pertaining to Military Records
Form #: SF180
Current Revision Date: 03/2024
Authority or Regulation: NARA (36 CFR 1233.18(d))
3. If you are requesting USCG records, bring lunch(+). The contractor for their scanning changed and they are horrendously behind.
4. If you were in the National Guard (Army or AirGuard) your state Adjutant General may or may not have forwarded your records to NARA/MPRC or the RMC. So this adds another search layer to any request for records.
5. The VBA will search all possible repositories until records are received or a DD-2963 STR Negative Certification is returned from the agency.
