APOD: 2020 November 1 - In the Center of the Trifid Nebula

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "In the Center of the Trifid Nebula." Also known as Messier 20 and NGC 6514, the Trifid ('divided into three lobes') Nebula is an area of ionized hydrogen lying ~9,000 light years away in the constellation Sagittarius. It was discovered by Charles Messier on June 5, 1764. The object is an unusual combination of an open cluster of stars; an emission nebula, a reflection nebula, and the three dust lanes that cause the trifurcated appearance. The dust lanes are also designated Barnard 85. This APOD is a composite image using data from the Subaru Telescope in Japan and the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope (HST).
