That tells me a little less than 2 million are infected and staying home.

Thank you my friend SSgt (Join to see) for posting the link to the COVID Tracking Project.
31,427,438 negative results out of 34,213,497 tests [assuming one test per person] seems reasonable.
Hopefully the deaths are being updated to eliminate influenza, bacterial pneumonia, etc from the data.
Current deaths out of 122,158 out of "cases" 2,786,059 comes out to roughly 4.4% which is significantly higher that the world average of less than 1% of infected dies from COVID.
This leads me to believe the data includes influenza deaths and other deaths where COVID should not be the primary cause of death.

I concur with your final assumption which is certainly reasonable.
I've felt from the beginning that the numbers were being inflated and more to the point so hospitals can reap the benefit of such inflation through the accumulation of the federal dollars that follow these cases. Whenever and wherever there is federal funding there is almost certain to be waste, fraud and abuse close behind.

Lots of statistics proving what we already know. There far more positives out in the public than thought originally. More testing, more positives. Deaths down. Hospitalizations down. Still don’t see how the extensive tracking effort has told us anything. You’d think by now, it would have revealed best practices and primary reasons for hot spots.

Nope it trumps fault and the left want to make it look bad for the election and give more free vote money to people but yes you are right
