Vindman looks like he'd have trouble getting troops to follow him even out of idle curiosity. . . .

So would his evals have justified promotion prior to this? O6 isn't a given.

You guys are right, but let's be pragmatic about this. He's a FAO that did a combat tour to punch his ticket. I Ran into a lot of those guys in both Iraq, Afghanistan, and the HOA. I'm not saying he didn't earn his awards and I'm not saying that he's not O-6 material but he didn't return to any type of combat unit after 2004. That's 16 years of doing stuff in an Embassy, COCOM, or in D.C. which is what FAO's do. The media makes it sound like he earned a SS or DSC and the CIB is automatic with a PH. My problem with the whole business is that he should have stayed out of it. Unfortunately, FAO's by the very nature of their jobs tend to be more political than non-FAO's. That has been my experience with them. And many of the ones I came in contact with look down upon us combat arms officer's as the "unwashed masses" who don't understand the big picture.
